Weekly Marvel Review: October 12, 2022 (Week 41)

Things are looking up for the mutants, despite having a book titled Death to the Mutants being released. The two deaths which happen in that issue happen to belong to the Eternals. Ikaris, who has been upset that an Eternal’s resurrection comes at the cost of a human’s life, gets his wish and dies a permanent death. Phastos “kills” the Machine That is Earth by rebooting the system in order to delay the Progenitor’s destruction of the planet. The judgements also continue this week, but the seven positive rulings for Lin Lie, Loki, Captain Marvel, Lauri-Ell, Mr. Fantastic, Legion and Logan, amount to too little too late.

Book the Week – Immortal X-Men #7 (Review score: 55 Points; 22 Characters). The mutants scramble to save the world, but not without a cost. The Quiet Council plots their next move including a controversial decision to resurrect a non-mutant and aligning themselves with Orchis. At the center of all this is Nightcrawler, who sacrifices himself over and over again.

Hero of the Week – Nightcrawler (Review score: 23 Points/3 Appearances; 7.67 Pts/App). Nightcrawler has his best performance in the Fantasy Comic League and is awarded with his first ever Hero of the Week. Fifteen of his nearly two dozen points come from his impressive performance in Immortal X-Men. His big week makes him the fourth best X-character behind Wolverine, Marvel Girl and Storm. He is now performing better than notable mutants such as Cyclops, Emma Frost, Magik and Professor X.

Antagonist of the Week – Doctor Doom (Review score: 11 Points/1 Appearances; 11.0 Pts/App). Doctor Doom, arguably Marvel’s most prominent antagonist, has been sitting in first place from a scoring point of view the majority of the year, but it took him nearly nine and a half months to earn his first Antagonist of the Week. His latest run-in with the Avengers in All-Out Avengers mysteriously finds him a man divided, with his good and bad side separated. His better half teams up with the Avengers to beat, and remerge with, Dark-Doom.

Top Characters (by review score). Nightcrawler (23); Iron Man (22); Captain America/Steve Rogers, Shuri, Wolverine/James Howlett (17); Captain Marvel (16); Sersi (15); Invisible Woman, Legion (13); Storm (12)
