Weekly Marvel Review: October 19, 2022 (Week 42)

A series of revelations come to light this week. In Iron Man, Ironheart—disguised as Cobalt Man—reveals her plan to keep the Mandarin’s Ten Rings for herself and defies Tony’s request to give them up. In Thor, Meridius—Eddie Brock’s deceptive future self—reveals he was the symbiote bonding with the Asgardian King in an attempt to acquire Darkoth’s promethium, the element of darkness. In X-Men, Forge discovers that Wolverine survived her journey into the vault way back in issue five and has been held captive by the Children of the Vault ever since.

Book the Week – Midnight Suns #2 (Review score: 54 Points; 9 Characters). Doctor Doom crashes the Strange Academy to extinguish a magical threat presented by Zoe Laveau, one of the school’s students. Agatha Harkness teleports Zoe away from the chaos while several of Marvel’s most magically-inclined, including Magik, Nico and Spirit Rider, fend off Doom. It’s not until Clea, the Sorcerer Supreme, inserts herself into the battle and exerts her dominance that Doom ends his assault and teleports away.

Hero of the Week – Spider-Man/Peter Parker (Review score: 16 Points/2 Appearances; 8.0 Pts/App). The battle for top Hero rages on between Iron Man, Wolverine and Peter Parker. However, Spider-Man uncharacteristically lags behind the other two as the end of the year quickly approaches. Peter may need to settle with earning the most Hero of the Week superlatives after securing a league leading sixth title.

Antagonist of the Week – Meridius (Review score: 14 Points/1 Appearance; 14.0 Pts/App). By showing up outside of the main Venom title, the evil Eddie Brock of the future sets himself apart from his mainstream counterpart and earns a spot in the Fantasy Comic League stat reviews. Typical of a symbiote, the majority of his score comes from power usage with 10 distinct abilities, including an Influence from bonding with Thor.

Top Characters (by review score). Spider-Man/Peter Parker (16); Wolverine/James Howlett (15); Meridius (14); Doctor Doom (13); Magik (12); Captain America/Sam Wilson, Kraven/Last Son, Thor (11); Blade, Iron Man, Marvel Girl (9)
