Weekly Marvel Review: October 05, 2022 (Week 40)

Judgement Day has come, now comes a day of reckoning. Starfox, the new Prime Eternal, makes the controversial decision to provide humans with access to the Eternals’ city as the destruction of Earth gets underway. Bucky Barnes comes face-to-face with the man and organization responsible for turning him into a brainwashed assassin. Rūna takes control of the Dísir, Bor’s disgraced Valkyries. Abigail Brand’s shady dealings aboard S.W.O.R.D. Station Two by Wiz-Kid and Cable, while down on Arakko, Isca resigns from the Great Ring.

Book the Week – Spider-Man #1 (Review score: 50 Points; 13 Characters). Morlun, a familiar antagonist in the Spider-Verse, makes an appearance in the first issue of Dan Slott’s new Spider-Man series. However, this time he shows up to help Spider-Man at the behest of Madame Web. This revelation comes a bit too late for Spider-Woman, who is attacked and removed from the Web of Life by Spider-Man Noir. He is joined by Mayday Parker, Ghost-Spider and Spider-Punk as the latest addition to Shathra’s hive.

Hero of the Week – Spider-Man/Peter Parker (Review score: 19 Points/2 Appearances; 9.5 Pts/App). Despite lagging behind in the overall standings this year, Peter Parker makes the most of his weekly appearances. With his fifth Hero of the Week title he ties Wolverine for the most in that category. With only 12 weeks left to cover a roughly a 20-point deficit to a surging Wolverine and Iron Man, who both star in A.X.E., Spider-Man may miss out on the top spot for the first time since the Fantasy Comic League started tracking all eligible characters in 2019.

Antagonist of the Week – Mr. Sinister (Review score: 6 Points/1 Appearance; 6.0 Pts/App). Between Mr. Sinister, Exodus, Sebastian Shaw, Mystique and Destiny, the Antagonists of Krakoa’s Quiet Council have received a lot of the focus in the X-Men books this year. Sinister himself takes his second Antagonist of the Year title as he and Exodus battle it out for the top X-baddie of the year. Both trail Dr. Doom by around a dozen points for the overall top spot.

Top Characters (by review score). Spider-Man/Peter Parker (19); Starfox (13); Marvel Girl (11); Captain America/Steve Rogers, Hulk (10); Winter Soldier, Wolverine/James Howlett (9); Ant-Man/Scott Lang, Daredevil/Elektra Natchios, Ghost Rider/Danny Ketch, Thor, Valkyrie/Jane Foster, Valkyrie/Rūna (7)
