Great divides appear between several characters, so notable that they earn a trio of Character Developments. Ghost Rider/Johnny Blaze rides into issue two of his latest issue, but he’s not entirely sure how he wound up there. The Spirit of Vengeance’s actions are now unknown to him in a change of dynamic for the character. Ben Reilly and Peter Parker have a heated battle at the end of the Beyond era, leaving a large “chasm” between the genetic brothers with one of them assuming a new identity. Krakoa’s Quiet Council sees a prominent member split from mutantkind’s membership. Magneto chooses to take up residence on Arrako and leaves an opening to fill on the council.
Book the Week – Immortal X-Men #1 (Review score: 52 Points; 26 Characters). Immortal X-Men promises to show the inner workings of the Quiet Council, so far centered around a battle of wits between Mr. Sinister and Destiny. However, the two seem to be playing different games. Magneto’s departure—expected by a few members—leaves the mutants scrambling to find a replacement and shift the power balance in their favor. Several candidates turn down the opportunity, but Hope and Selene step up to make strong cases for the vacant seat.
Hero of the Week – Spider-Woman (Review score: 16 Points/2 Appearances; 8.0 Pts/App). Two years worth of adversaries come crashing down on Jess in her series finale. The Ant-Arach9, led by Octavia Vermis and Aeturnum, push Jess to her limit but she handles the group of villains with ease. She breaks a few bones and spirits but is a Character Development short of hitting for the Fantasy Comic League Cycle in her first Hero of the Week performance of 2022.
Antagonist of the Week – Thanos (Review score: 7 Points/1 Appearance; 7.0 Pts/App). Octavia Vermis may have earned the Antagonist of the Week had her assault on Spider-Woman been successful, but her loss works against her. Instead, Thanos—who successfully earns a Defeats Antagonist—gets the superlative, his first of the year. An alternative universe version of his daughter Nebula loses her army and life at the Mad Titan’s hands in Silver Surfer Rebirth.
Top Characters (by review score). Spider-Woman (16); Captain Marvel, Shift, Spider-Man/Miles Morales (12); Ghost Rider/Johnny Blaze (10); Iron Fist/Lin Lie, Spectrum, Spider-Man/Ben Reilly (9); Spider-Man/Peter Parker (8); Octavia Vermis, Thanos (7)
