Weekly Marvel Review: April 06, 2022 (Week 14)

Typically, big event stories end with the hero riding off into the sunset after saving the day. However, the conclusion of Devil’s Reign gives Kingpin, the event’s main antagonist, a (somewhat) happy ending. But it’s not just Wilson Fisk finding a new lease on life. Cassandra Nova joins up with the Marauders crew, though her shipmates remain suspicious of the mutant mass murderer. Omega Red gets reborn again, despite Beast’s wishes, in an attempt to make amends with X-Force tampering with his previous resurrection.

Book the Week – Devil’s Reign #6 (Review score: 109 Points; 28 Characters). Even though the story ultimately turns out to be about the Kingpin, that does not mean the heroes do not save the day. The Daredevil duo defeat the malevolent mayor with Elektra stopping Matt from committing a public execution. The rest of the heroes stop the Thunderbolt Units with a select few single-handedly taking down some of the villains. Luke Cage, the soon-to-be Mayor of New York, stands up and shrugs off the Purple Man’s mind control to end his threat.

Hero of the Week – The Thing (Review score: 16 Points/4 Appearances; 4.0 Pts/App). The Thing has his best single week performance since the Fantasy Comic League’s expanded score keeping began in 2019. The focal point of that performance comes in the finale to his mini series, where he leads a horde of robots into Death’s domain to save Alicia Masters, his future wife. His cameo in Devil’s Reign shows him being one of specific heroes collaring one of the Thunderbolt members and earning a Defeats Antagonist.

Antagonist of the Week – Kingpin (Review score: 8 Points/1 Appearance; 8.0 Pts/App). Despite Wilson Fisk being a looming presence in comics over the years, he never manages to put up a lot of points. He routinely outperforms other Antagonists based on Appearances alone—his 32 in 2021 was tops—but his ratios (.56 Powers/App and 2.22 Points/App) are among the lowest of the top 25 Antagonists. Regardless, he has best performance since last December and earns his first ever Antagonist of the Week.

Top Characters (by review score). The Thing (16); Captain Marvel, Domino, Kid Omega, Moon Knight, Mr. Fantastic, She-Hulk (12), Black Widow, Daredevil/Elektra Natchios, Daredevil/Matt Murdock, Spider-Punk (10)
