Weekly Marvel Review: October 13, 2021 (Week 41)

The Hulk puts up his best week of the year, but his performance in the finale to Al Ewing’s critically acclaimed Immortal Hulk series fails to earn Bruce Banner his first Hero of the Week title. In the end, the Joe Fix-It persona stands out in a book which deals with Banner’s many personalities warring for control of the Hulk’s body. Meanwhile, the “World War She-Hulk” storyline in Avengers proves that Jennifer Walter’s remains in control of her rage despite the Winter Guard’s tempering. She saves Atlantis and reveals she was merely going along with the Red Widow’s brainwashing.

Book the Week – Iron Man #13 (Review score: 64 Points; 12 Characters). Iron Man and his ragtag group of adventurers reunite and formerly band together under the tongue in cheek title “Space Friends.” They dispatch Korvac’s own allies fairly easily, but the big bad escapes into the Power Cosmic aboard Taa II with Iron Man following behind me.

Hero of the Week – Iron Man (Review score: 17 Points/2 Appearances; 8.5 Pts/App). Even without the questionable appearance in Darkhold: Iron Man, Tony earns enough points to win his third Hero of the Week title. Outside of his cosmically charged solo title, his other appearance comes in Shang-Chi, the latest hero to question the Master of Kung-Fu’s motives as the leader of the Five Weapons Society.

Antagonist of the Week – Taskmaster (Review score: 15 Points/1 Appearance; 15.0 Pts/App). Taskmaster pushes for the top spot once more and gets a major boost after kidnapping Tiana Toomes, aka the Vulture’s granddaughter, aka Starling, aka Miles Morales’ new girlfriend. His 15-point performance lifts him past Doctor Doom and Knull and puts him two points behind top baddie, Carnage. With about 10 weeks left in the year, the title for Top Antagonist is still within his grasp.

Top Characters (by review score). Iron Man (17); Taskmaster (15); Hulk/Bruce Banner (14); Spider-Man/Ben Reilly (13); Hulk (Jennifer Walters), Ikaris, Shang-Chi (11); Kid Kang, Misty Knight (10), Invisible Woman, Mr. Fantastic, Spider-Man/Peter Parker, Venom/Eddie Brock (9)
