Weekly Marvel Review: May 26, 2021 (Week 21)

Creating a perfect world is no easy task. The Squadron Supreme deals with an increasing number of heroes becoming aware that something is wrong in their world, but when Mephisto is the architect of your utopia your foundation is already pretty shaky. Black Panther deals with the final fallout of Wakanda’s journey into space, forcing him to destroy the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda in order to save the soul of his country. Professor Xavier endangers the peaceful balance in the mutant homeland of Krakoa when he once again coldly dismisses Mystique’s request to reunite her with her deceased wife. Omega Sentinel gets added to the Fantasy Comic League database.

Book the Week – Black Panther #25 (Review score: 106 Points; 21 Characters). In the conclusion to the expansive Black Panther story, T’Challa triumphs over the twisted Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda that he had unwittingly established with his country’s space expedition. The final battle comes down between Black Panther—and some of Marvel’s most prominent Black characters—and a symbiote-enhanced Killmonger. Good wins, but now the real challenge of restoring Wakanda’s good name across the cosmos begins for the recently crowned Emperor.

Hero of the Week – Doctor Spectrum (Review score: 16 Points/2 Appearances; 8.0 Pts/App). Another Squadron Supreme member takes center stage in the latest Heroes Reborn issue and benefits from the focus. The colorfully cosmic character earns 13 points in the main Reborn title finds himself the target of the bounty hunter Rocket Raccoon. Like the rest of the Squadron, Doctor Spectrum barely flinches at dispatching his foe in a brutal fashion, i.e., holding Rocket down to burn in a supernova.

Antagonist of the Week – Killmonger (Review score: 7 Points/1 Appearance; 7.0 Pts/App). No antagonist breaks out this week, with Killmonger winning a three-way tie for the Antagonist of the Week title and putting up a modest seven point performance. He gets the honor over Skurge and Maestro because his latest war for the right to rule Wakanda comes to an end. Though he loses the battle, now that he has been resurrected he can be around to fight another day.

Performance of the Week – Black Panther (Review score: 14 Points/1 Appearance; 14.0 Pts/App). Black Panther historically underperforms in the Powers per Appearance category, but so far in 2021 the King of Wakanda has the 7th highest Pwrs/App ratio (3.41) for all characters with a minimum of 10 Appearances. (T’Challa also has the highest ratio for characters with 15 or more Appearances outside of the Spider-characters Peter, Miles and Jess.) His 10 distinct power usages in his book’s finale gives him that extra boost to keep him in the 7th/8th spot for the 2021 overall rankings.

Top Characters (by review score). Doctor Spectrum (16); Nighthawk (15); Black Panther (14); Hyperion (12); Black Widow, Power Princess, Spider-Man/Miles Morales (11); White Widow (10); Beta Ray Bill, Mirage, Reptil (9)
