Weekly Marvel Review: May 19, 2021 (Week 20)

Another crack forms in the world of Heroes Reborn. Echo, the recently crowned Phoenix, appears in a Ravencroft Asylum fully in possession of her new abilities and fully aware that something is wrong with the world. She becomes the second hero Blades recruits to try and fix their reality. Blur, who stars in the main story for the latest Heroes Reborn, also lets on that he could see cracks in the world while he was racing through reality. But he’s too fast to care about that, or even remember. Characters added to the Fantasy Comic League database this week include Sister Dagger, who meets the six appearances in under a year requirement; Xorn; Killer Shrike; Scarecrow. Onslaught, the X-Men’s Big Baddie from the 90’s returns after his last appearance nearly eight years ago.

Book the Week – Way of X #2 (Review score: 66 Points; 30 Characters). Professor Xavier ranks up there with some of the least attentive fathers in the Marvel Universe, but denying his own son’s resurrection definitely reaches the lowest depths of dreadful dad moves. Luckily for Legion, he does not need his father’s telepathic backup to inhabit a new body. Nightcrawler plays a pivotal role in Legion’s return, pulling the trigger despite the religious turmoil it caused him. To repay Kurt’s favor, Legion shares troubling news. Xavier’s other “child,” the evil telepathic entity known as Onslaught, is haunting the island as the Patchwork Man.

Hero of the Week – Spider-Man (Review score: 13 Points/2 Appearances; 6.5 Pts/App). What’s a new series if not a good excuse to have Spider-Man team up with the main character of the book? Not only does Spider-Man meet up with his Way of the Spider (“Spider-Fu”) master in the new Shang-Chi series, but he makes it all about himself by getting transformed into a giant spider monster and fighting Shang. He gets 10 points in that issue including an uncommon use of Claw and Morph.

Antagonist of the Week – Sin (Review score: 10 Points/1 Appearance; 10.0 Pts/App). With one issue left to go in the current Captain America run, prominent series antagonist Sin taps into some of her classic powers. Back during her older Mother Superior phase, Sin possessed possessed powers such as telekinesis and teleportation. After assuming she no longer possessed these skills, Alexa Lukin—her surrogate mother—shows Sin how to access them in time for the big finale.

Performance of the Week – Black Knight (Review score: 12 Points/1 Appearance; 12.0 Pts/App). Three issues into Curse of the Ebony Blade and the Black Knight suffers another death; this time at the hands of Elsa Bloodstone (who will swear she was just trying to help). Luckily, the recent reveal that the Ebony Blade grants the wielder immunity while in possession of the blade saves him again. And now the race with Sir Mordred is on to see who can collect all four of the Ebony artifacts.

Top Characters (by review score). Spider-Man/Peter Parker (13); Black Knight (12); Wolverine (11); Nightcrawler, Sin (10); Legion, Nova/Sam Alexander (9); Elsa Bloodstone, Ms. Marvel, Pixie, Shang-Chi, Valkyrie/Jane Foster (8)
