Weekly Marvel Review: May 12, 2021 (Week 19)

Uneasy alliances with enemies and deals with the devil tend to backfire, but that does not stop the Marvel heroes from exploring these tenuous Team-Ups. Conan teams up with Heng the Insurgent after witnessing his immortality, but he soon discovers that Heng’s gift comes at the expense of his own men, including Conan. Black Cat and Black Fox make a deal with the Guilded Saint, but it’s her former mentor who ends up betraying her in the end. Reed Richards and Doctor Doom, Marvel’s oldest adversaries, cross swords and verbally spar before Reed agrees to be Victor’s best man in his upcoming nuptials. After failing to make a deal with the demon Kindred, Kingpin relies on magic to bring his son, The Rose, back to life and into the Fantasy Comic League database. Other characters added include the Inhuman Crystal and the antagonist Scorcher.

Book the Week – Giant Size Amazing Spider-Man: King’s Ransom #1 (Review score: 87 Points; 20 Characters). Spider-Man’s support of Boomerang, a longtime foe turned friend—or so he thought—finally comes back to bite him, just as the New Avengers had warned. The super sized issue reveals that Boomerang had been playing Spider-Man for a fool ever since replying to an ad to be Peter Parker’s roommate. Boomerang betrays Spider-Man and steals all the pieces of the Lifeline Tablet for the Kingpin, facilitating the return of the Rose.

Hero of the Week – Hyperion (Review score: 27 Points/3 Appearances; 9.0 Pts/App). The second issue of Heroes Reborn focuses on the Squadron Supreme’ team leader, Hyperion. In an issue where he puts down major threats including Galactus and Ultron, his biggest victory comes when he puts down this alternate universe’s Hulk, the latest character to sense something is amiss with the world. Hyperion also stars in two additional tie-in books, one which features his early days as a teammate of the Shi’ar Imperial Guard and another showcasing his association with the powerless photographer, Peter Parker.

Antagonist of the Week – Doctor Doom (Review score: 17 Points/2 Appearances; 8.5 Pts/App). Doctor Doom earns two Character Development points in his second Antagonist of the Week performance. He makes a surprise proposal to his most trusted ally Victorious, for the good of Latveria of course, and asks his nemesis to be his best man. But he also has another marriage of convenience when he joins the Guardians of the Galaxy. Doom makes a play to swap bodies with Hulkling but gets deceived by the Guardians and winds up in Rocket Raccoon’s body much to his dismay.

Performance of the Week – Penance (Review score: 10 Points/1 Appearance; 10.0 Pts/App). Penance, the co-CXO of X-Corp, shows why she’s a hands on boss. While her colleague Angel favors the slow rollout approach, Penance takes matters into her own claws. She recruits two new members to the Board (Multiple Man and Trinary) and reveals the company’s biggest asset, a teleporting and levitating headquarters which sets the markets ablaze with interest in Krakoa’s privately held company.

Top Characters (by review score). Hyperion (27); Doctor Doom (17); Spider-Man/Peter Parker, Spider-Woman (16); Black Cat (12); Conan, Lyja the Laserfist, Penance (10); Boomerang (9); Mr. Fantastic, Human Torch, Prestige, Silk, Shatterstar, Wind Dancer (7)
