Weekly Marvel Review: March 22, 2023 (Week 12)

A trio of books come to an end, the biggest one being Kitty Pryde’s second stint leading the Marauders. The crew wrap up both major plotlines in the finale including the mystery of the Mysterium Puzzle Box and its significance to the creation of Threshold, an ancient mutant civilization. Daken, now known as Fang, ends the minor threat presented by the Theater of Pain and Brimstone Love, who only appeared in three of the 12 books. Tiger Division and Spider-Man: The Lost Hunt also conclude their five-issue runs.

Book the Week – Women of Marvel #1 (Review score: 53 Points; 10 Characters). As common with the recurring anthology books being released by Marvel, the latest Women of Marvel puts the spot light on a variety of characters. Framed around a courthouse trial led by She-Hulk, the book features team-up adventures between three sets of friends. Black Cat and Silk’s karaoke night gets interrupted by Mysterio; Ms. America and Kate Bishop rescue Starling while investigating a possible clue to Ms. America’s Utopian Parallel upbringing; Ms. Marvel uses a school trip to New Orleans as an opportunity to team-up with one of her marvelous heroes, Photon.

Hero of the Week – Spider-Man/Peter Parker (Review score: 20 Points/4 Appearances; 5.0 Pts/App). Spider-Man continues his early dominance of the year with his fourth Hero of the Week. He holds a score of 145, leading Iron Man, last year’s top performer, by more than 50 points. He scores two Team-Ups in his four Appearances, one with Hulk’s Joe Fixit persona and the other with Doctor Strange in the Sorcerer Supreme’s new title.

Antagonist of the Week – Carnage (Review score: 6 Points/1 Appearance; 6.0 Pts/App). There are a lot of versions of Carnage sulking around the Marvel Universe right now. There is the symbiote itself, now bonded with the fallen NYPD detective Jon Shayde, and there is the clone of the Carnage symbiote created by the Harrower in the Deadpool comic. But the one who earns the Antagonist of the Week is the version of Cletus Kasady who bonded with Iron Man’s Extrembiote during the “King in Black” event. He’s been patiently waiting for his original symbiote to return to him in a twisted manifestation of St. Estes Home for Boys.

Top Characters (by review score). Spider-Man/Peter Parker (20); Photon (14); Doctor Strange, Punisher (12); She-Hulk, Silk (10); Black Cat, Hulk (9); Hawkeye/Kate Bishop, Kate Pryde (7)
