Weekly Marvel Review: March 01, 2023 (Week 09)

A new month brings new beginnings. Hallow’s Eve gets her own spinoff series following the “Dark Web” event and she’s haunting New York searching for Ben Reilly. Iron Man gets another series as does Ghost-Spider and Rogue and Gambit, the X-Men’s merriest married mutants star in another team-up book. The Cosmic Ghost Rider returns for another series, his first since Revenge of the Cosmic Ghost Rider book in 2020.

Book the Week – Spider-Man #6 (Review score: 30 Points; 15 Characters). Crowned the new “Chosen One,” Silk wastes no time in developing a plan to take the fight to Shathra. But when the plan goes awry and the Totem Dagger proves ineffective against the the Wasp Queen, Silk turns it on Morlun, their tenuous ally. To be fair, the vampiric antagonist was about to drain Silk’s life-energy when it appeared all had been lost, so Silk acted more in self defense. Luckily, Morlun’s destruction turns out to be the key and his unwilling sacrifice releases the energy of all the spiders he had absorbed and heals the Web of Life and Destiny.

Hero of the Week – Domino (Review score: 11 Points/1 Appearance; 11.0 Pts/App). Domino ties with Ghost Rider this week but gets the nod over the Spirit of Vengeance because she gets her revenge on the Man with the Peacock Tattoos. She leads a portion of X-Force to raid XENO’s Genoshan base and frees Max, the mutant orphan being held captive by the Man with the Peacock Tattoos. She leaves her former tormentor at the mercy of his creations, now free of their telepathic controls.

Antagonist of the Week – Shathra (Review score: 5 Points/1 Appearance; 5.0 Pts/App). Shathra’s moment of victory is at hand. She sends her tendrils out across the Spider-Verse ready to reshape it into her Great Nest. She sees through Cindy’s attempted deception to infiltrate Loom World, survives the assassination attempt using the Totem Dagger and reveals Morlun’s true nature as a totem of the leech.

Top Characters (by review score). Domino, Ghost Rider/Johnny Blaze (11); Ghost-Spider, Iron Man, Spider-Man/Peter Parker (10); Deadpool, Hallow’s Eve (9); Destroyer, Gambit, Rogue, Venom/Eddie Brock (7)
