Weekly Marvel Review: July 20, 2022 (Week 29)

Even beyond the grave, Dr. Strange defends reality from mystic and cosmic threats. Although this time he, via his Tarot deck, enlists Blue Marvel to gather the new team of Defenders. The new Defenders series by Al Ewing and Javier Rodríguez picks up where their previous volume ended and includes Taaia, Galactus’ mother and a character introduced in the last series. Shang-Chi’s new series begins and a trio of titles end: Maestro: World War MThe Marvels, and Savage Spider-Man.

Book the Week – The Marvels #12 (Review score: 96 Points; 33 Characters). The Marvels ends after a dozen issues detailing Siancong’s mysterious origins and its connection to Lady Lotus. The assorted characters which starred in the book, including Captain America, Black Cat, Human Torch and Aero, are joined by additional characters from around the Marvel universe including members of the Avengers, X-Men, Agents of Atlas and the Winter Guard in the finale.

Hero of the Week – Iron Man (Review score: 21 Points/4 Appearances; 5.25 Pts/App). Iron Man continues his reign atop the Power Rankings for Marvel’s heroes, padding his lead with a four-appearance performance. Outside of his main appearances in Avengers and Iron Man, Tony plays a major role at the start of the Eternals and Mutants feud. He traps Sersi and questions her people’s motives only to learn she’s in the dark as much as he is when it comes to Druig’s plans for the X-Men.

Antagonist of the Week – Maestro (Review score: 7 Points/1 Appearance; 7.0 Pts/App). Maestro’s latest miniseries comes to an end and he stops the latest threat to his rule over Dystopia. His five Appearances in his miniseries account for all of his Appearances in 2022 and helped him climb to 15th in the Antagonist Rankings. He averaged 5.2 Points/Appearance with 2 Antagonists Defeated.

Top Characters (by review score). Iron Man (21); Spider-Man/Peter Parker (18); Venom/Eddie Brock (14); Shang-Chi (13); Moon Knight (12); Captain America/Steve Rogers, Human Torch, Marvel Girl, Wolverine/James Howlett (10); Phoenix/Maya Lopez, Thor (9)
