Weekly Marvel Review: June 29, 2022 (Week 26)

No sooner had Cyclops shared mutantdom’s biggest secret—that of mutant resurrection—than a few of their members opted out of the resurrection cycle. Magneto and Storm, both members of Arakko’s Great Ring, destroy their Cerebro back-ups in a show of good faith to the Arakkii. Kid Omega’s backup has also been removed from the Krakoa databanks, though if that’s accidently or part of his journey of self exploration has yet to be determined. Though not dead, Sabretooth returns to the land of the living after breaking free from his exile in the Pit.

Book the Week – Thor: Lightning and Lament #1 (Review score: 46 Points; 11 Characters). Before bringing the “Love and Thunder” to theaters, Thor rains down “Lightning and Lament” in the comics with a tale from the Asgardian Prince’s past. A big part of the issue revolves around Thor’s alter ego, Dr. Donald Blake—before the recent split of the two personalities as separate entities. The majority of the action comes from a battle with the Rock Trolls, in which Thor helps his allies turn the tide.

Hero of the Week – Thor (Review score: 17 Points/2 Appearances; 8.5 Pts/App). Thor and the Avengers traverse the Multiverse to aid different versions of themselves against Mephisto’s assault on alt-universe Avengers. His two appearances add up to his league-leading, fourth Hero of the Week. His 13 power usages give him a total of 116 Powers scored for the year, also tops for all characters. He currently sits at second best Hero.

Antagonist of the Week – Mephisto (Review score: 6 Points/1 Appearance; 6.0 Pts/App). Mephisto’s era- and universe-spanning plan to wipe out the Avengers picks up steam. His latest target is a Super Soldier sorcerer during World War II, but the Avenger’s involvement behind the scenes help thwart the demon’s plans. Despite his latest loss, Mephisto earns his first Antagonist of the Week.

Top Characters (by review score). Thor (17); Venom/Eddie Brock (15); Captain America/Sam Wilson (13); Wolverine/James Howlett (11); Kid Omega (10); Black Cat, Deadpool (8); Domino, She-Hulk, Spider-Man/Miguel O’Hara (7)
