Weekly Marvel Review: June 22, 2022 (Week 25)

Ever since the Krakoan era began, it seems mutants have been making headlines every day with world-changing news. First, they create their own nation. Next, they develop cure-all medicines to share with allied nations and then breath life into Mars. Now, Scott Summers goes public with their species’ immortality. But for every big reveal the world gets, there remains deeper secrets to which only Krakoa’s Quiet Council is privy. Hope Summers, the youngest member of the prestigious mutant family and most recent addition to the Council, gets brought up to speed on the island’s origins and inner workings, and she’s already influencing the power structures.

Book the Week – Marvel’s Voices: Pride #1 (Review score: 76 Points; 30 Characters). Marvel’s latest entry in their Voices anthology celebrates their LGBTQI+ characters once again. Emperor and Hulkling, arguably the publisher’s most notable gay couple, take center stage when they respond to a Young Avengers’ distress single. Ms. America begrudgingly joins them in saving Loki from a pack of scornful exes. Hercules and Marvel Boy face a literal merging of their cultures by fighting an army of Olympian-Kree soldiers. D-Man hosts a support group for Trans superheroes struggling with their identities and powers.

Hero of the Week – Spider-Man/Peter Parker (Review score: 19 Points/3 Appearances; 6.33 Pts/App). Peter Parker has been kept out of the top spot in the power rankings for the first half of the year. Now he’s making up for lost time and quickly climbing the ranks, reaching second place, but still lags behind Iron Man by 28 points and 17 Appearances. Since stepping back into the starring role of the relaunched Amazing Spider-Man in Week 17, Parker has 14 Appearances. His 19 points this week marks his best performance of the year and his second Hero of the Week.

Antagonist of the Week – Loki (Review score: 7 Points/1 Appearance; 7.0 Pts/App). Even bad guys just want some time to hang out with their friends. Loki, who constantly tiptoes that line between Hero and Antagonist, earns his first Antagonist of the Week in 2022. Typical of the God of Stories—née God of Lies—his call for help turns out to be a bit of misdirection. Though the aid of his Young Avenger teammates was not necessary in combating his evil exes, Loki’s scheme to hang out with his friends worked out for the best.

Top Characters (by review score). Spider-Man/Peter Parker (19); Moon Girl (16); Spider-Man/Miles Morales (15); Punisher (13); Gloriana, Silver Surfer (11); Marvel Boy (9); Emma Frost, Marvel Girl, Moon Knight (8)
