Weekly Marvel Review: April 27, 2022 (Week 17)

Death and rebirth remain a key theme of Marvel’s recent comics. The Punisher features Frank Castle’s recently resurrected wife by the Hand and after several issues of torture, Hydro-Man finally succumbs to Carnage and gets absorbed into the symbiote. The latest Thor title honors Odin as several of Marvel’s elite gather in Asgard to lay the former All-Father to rest. The book also confirms that Odin’s spirit currently resides in the reforged Mjolnir because Valhalla has been wiped out. The latest relaunched X-Title, Knights of X, reconnects the members of Excalibur under a new team name.

Book the Week – Knights of X #1 (Review score: 67 Points; 20 Characters). Merlyn’s war against mutants in Otherworld continues, with the Captain Britain Corps standing as the main line of defense. But Betsy Braddock needs more soldiers to win this war so she turns to Merlyn’s daughter, Roma. The Queen Regent of Roma Regina assists Captain Britain by bringing her former Excalibur teammates back to Otherworld. They immediately take the battle to King Arthur and get a surprising ally in the resurrected—and young—Sir Mordred.

Hero of the Week – Thor (Review score: 11 Points/1 Appearance; 11.0 Pts/App). Thor publicly says goodbye to his father, but secretly struggles with Odin’s lingering presence in Mjolnir. He earns the bulk of his powers in a back-up story which showed one of the many times Odin tricked his son in an attempt to teach him a lesson. Despite the somber story, Thor celebrates his current league-leading third Hero of the Week title.

Antagonist of the Week – Thanos (Review score: 10 Points/1 Appearance; 10.0 Pts/App). Thanos is one major cosmic player that did not get an invitation to Odin’s funeral, which is not surprising. But he did clean up in his appearance in Silver Surfer Rebirth. He defeats not one, but four, different versions of Silver Surfer on his quest to find out who is messing with reality.

Top Characters (by review score). Thor (11); Captain Britain, Ms. Marvel, Thanos (10); Punisher, Silver Surfer, Spider-Man/Peter Parker (9); Carnage, Wasp/Nadia Van Dyne (8); Jack of Hearts, Kylun (7)
