There are a lot of benefits to joining a team of superheroes, especially one as prestigious as the Avengers. Namor, Phoenix, Valkyrie and the Starbrand officially take their place among Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. But it’s not just heroes that see the positives in banding together. The Serpent Society—one of the more prominent criminal enterprises in Marvel—has been operating as a nefarious unions since their debut in 1985. Key members include Asp, Cotton Mouth, King Cobra and Puff Adder enjoy the guaranteed pay, health benefits and of course the snappy, snake-themed suits. Of the 16 members who showed up in the latest Avengers book, six are already being scored while three others get added to the Fantasy Comic League database: Anaconda, Princess Python and Rattler.
Book the Week – Avengers #55 (Review score: 59 Points; 21 Characters). Avengers takes an interlude from the Multiversal Masters of Evil war to recruit a new member. In the wake of Black Panther stepping down as Avengers Chairman, the remaining members shore up their ranks by approving Nighthawk’s membership. Nighthawk proves his worth by single-handedly taking down the Serpent Society who are performing sacrificial rituals to commune with their new god, Mephisto.
Hero of the Week – Captain America/Steve Rogers (Review score: 13 Points/2 Appearances; 6.5 Pts/App). The co-Captain Americas launch their new books with the team-up title Captain America #0. Appropriately, the bastions of equality score the same number of points in their book. However, Steve Rogers’ Avengers business gives him an extra two points and the edge for his second Hero of the Week in 2022.
Antagonist of the Week – Baron Mordo (Review score: 13 Points/1 Appearance; 13.0 Pts/App). Baron Mordo teams up with Nightmare to trouble Doctor Strange’s dreams and shake the Sorcerer Supreme’s confidence. Upon infiltrating the Sanctum Santorum, Mordo conjures up a variety of magical spells and gets the upper hand on his nemesis. He steals the Darkhold but fails to complete his summoning ritual to bring Nightmare to the waking world.
Top Characters (by review score). Captain America/Steve Rogers (13); Baron Mordo, Hulk (12); Captain America/Sam Wilson (11); Doctor Strange (9); Shang-Chi, Wolverine/James Howlett (8); Deadpool, Nighthawk (7); Chieftain Xin, Ghost-Spider (6)
