Family is important, especially around the holiday season, even the non-traditional and sometimes dysfunctional families found in Marvel comics. In Amazing Spider-Man Peter Parker’s clone “brother” continues his Beyond training with the Daughters of the Dragon, Misty Knight and Colleen Wing. Black Panther’s revamped origin story in Black Panther Legends has him cross paths with his future wife, Storm, while they are young. Ka-Zar and Shanna continue stalking their son to see what sort of trouble he’s getting up to in the Savage Land. And in the Infinity Comics, Kushala continues her quest to save her family line from Doctor Doom and Hulkling and Wiccan come closer to fixing their broken reality and finding one another across space once more.
Book the Week – Shang-Chi #6 (Review score: 34 Points; 8 Characters). Shang-Chi turns untrustworthy family member Brother Sabre over to the Avengers when he learns that he failed to relinquish the Cosmic Cube they had stolen earlier in the series. The move, the latest in several attempts to reform the Five Weapons Society, causes more friction with his blood family but goes a ways in repairing some trust with the members of his superhero family. Shang-Chi goes toe-to-toe with the Avengers’ Mighty Thor in this issue to conclude the “Shang-Chi vs. the Marvel Universe” arc.
Hero of the Week – Kid Kang (Review score: 11 Points/1 Appearance; 11.0 Pts/App). Kid Kang, whose family basically consists of different variations of himself, comes full circle in his trip through time. After taking on the personas of different versions of Kang, he finally takes the mantle of Kang the Conqueror and attempts to change the fate of his destined love, Ravonna Renslayer. Unfortunately, her death can not be prevented and he is forced to watch her die all over again despite his change in behavior. Will this inevitability prove Kang is forever meant to be the popular antagonist, or can Kid Kang remain separate from all his other selves and achieve a peaceful existence?
Antagonist of the Week – Doctor Doom (Review score: 8 Points/1 Appearance; 8.0 Pts/App). Thanks to the Kushala Infinity Comic, Doctor Doom continues to put some distance between himself and the next closest Antagonist for the top spot on the year. His quest to obtain all the Wands of Watoomb and wipe out Kushala’s ancestral line races to its conclusion and boosts him to a 10-point advantage over Taskmaster.
Top Characters (by review score). Kid Kang (11); Shang-Chi, Storm (10); Colleen Wing, Misty Knight (9); Doctor Doom (8); Thor (7); Ka-Zar, Moon Knight, Spider-Woman, Spirit Rider (6)
