Weekly Marvel Review: November 03, 2021 (Week 44)

The Avengers and the students of the Strange Academy experience the fallout from the Sorcerer Supreme’s death. A slow week due to distributor delays and supply chain jams hitting the comic book industry results in several titles’ release dates getting pushed back. However, the digital-only Infinity Comics remain unaffected and account for three of the seven released titles. A new series featuring Emperor Hulkling and Wiccan kicks off and joins the ongoing Spirit Rider and X-Men stories on Marvel’s Unlimited platform.

Book the Week – Death of Doctor Strange: Avengers #1 (Review score: 40 Points; 11 Characters). While the students of the Strange Academy receive an impromptu school break, the Avengers deal with interdimensional threats. A refugee from Cyttorak’s Crimson Cosmos sends Juggernaut-like beings rampaging through the streets of Manhattan. It’s up to Iron Man, the magically-agnostic Avenger, to stop the threat and help the Survivor get her message out about the Three Mothers, the event’s antagonists.

Hero of the Week – Thor (Review score: 10 Points/1 Appearance; 10.0 Pts/App). While Iron Man saves the day in the Avengers tie-in book, Thor is the main Avenger on the frontline, taking the beating. The Cyttorak constructs test Thor’s durability and the might of Mjolnir. In the action-centric title, Thor gets credit for Mjolnir three times—Blunt, Projectile and Weapon.

Antagonist of the Week – Enchantress (Review score: 8 Points/1 Appearance; 8.00 Pts/App). The Enchantress sheds some light into her relationship with her sons, Iric and and Alvi Brorson, and how Doctor Strange helped the villainess save them while they were children. With Strange’s untimely death, Pulsari, the evil sorcerer who threatened the young boys lives in the past, returns to capture them once more. With the Sorcerer Supreme missing, Enchantress teams up with Iric in order to save Alvi.

Top Characters (by review score). Thor (10); Wolverine/James Howlett (9); Captain Marvel, Enchantress, Iron Man (8); Captain America, Darkhawk, Doctor Strange (7); Jubilee, Red Guardian (6)
