Weekly Marvel Review: October 27, 2021 (Week 43)

The ladies of the Marvel Universe dominate the latest weekly release of books. Of the Top 10 performances, seven come from female characters. Colleen Wing and Misty Knight, Spider-Man’s main supporting characters currently, put Ben Reilly through a combat trial in Amazing Spider-Man; Elektra continues her crusade as the new Daredevil with Typhoid Mary’s help; Invisible Woman and Nature Girl star once more in Deadpool and X-Men Infinity Comics, respectively. Tigra gets added to the Review Database when she reappears in the latest Moon Knight issue to check in with her former West Coast Avengers teammate.

Book the Week – Inferno #2 (Review score: 55 Points; 21 Characters). To paraphrase a popular saying: “Krakoa hath no fury like Mystique scorned.” Mystique’s plan to resurrect Destiny—her departed wife—comes to fruition and the latest issue of Inferno details how she managed to make it happen. It also reveals how she convinced members of the Quiet Council, including Emma Frost, to support Destiny’s addition to the ruling elite. Newly seated, Destiny pulls her own power move by dashing Professor X’s attempt to remove Mystique from power before he can even call a vote.

Hero of the Week – Emma Frost (Review score: 13 Points/2Appearances; 6.50 Pts/App). A three-way tie for Hero of the Week breaks in Emma Frost’s favor thanks to Inferno as well. After Mystique’s political subterfuge—which was made possible thanks to Emma’s surprise vote in support of Destiny—Professor X, Magneto and Moira MacTaggert choose to reveal the secret of Moira’s mutanthood and multiple lives. While still supportive of the mutant utopia, Emma’s loyalties to Xavier and Magneto become strained as a result of this information being withheld from her until this time. And it’s the Character Development that gives Emma the edge for her first Hero of the Week.

Antagonist of the Week – Mystique (Review score: 11 Points/1 Appearance; 11.0 Pts/App). Mystique also earns her first superlative in 2021 and sees her stock rise enough to make her Marvel’s fifth overall Antagonist with two months left to go in the year. Now, with her lover returned her side, the power of the Quiet Council a little more in her favor and two more issues of Inferno left in the year, time will tell if her flame burns bright and continues her rise in the ranks.

Top Characters (by review score). Emma Frost, Kate Pryde, Spider-Man/Peter Parker (13); Elektra, Mystique (11); Venom/Eddie Brock (10); Black Widow, Moon Knight, Spider-Woman, Typhoid Mary (9)
