Weekly Marvel Review: September 22, 2021 (Week 38)

Three titles drop their final issues this week, with a recently-concluded series receiving a one shot finale. Reptil and X-Corp finish their short runs at four and five issues, respectively, while Guardians of the Galaxy ends with issue 18. However, Al Ewing’s cosmic storyline appears to be far from over as long as he keeps piloting the S.W.O.R.D. While one doctor stands on the precipice of galactic greatness, another doctor falls at death’s door. Doctor Strange’s big event, Death of Doctor Strange, kicks off with a blast from the past.

Book the Week – X-Men: The Onslaught Revelation #1 (Review score: 73 Points; 25 Characters). The finale to Si Spurrier’s Way of X influences a lot of characters when Nightcrawler and Legion put an end to Onslaught’s influence over the resurrected mutants. Kurt also develops the solution to his religious mission with the creation of the Spark, a way of appreciating life for the mutants of Krakoa. The Influence power itself makes a strong impression with seven different characters all receiving credit for inspiring and effecting those around them.

Hero of the Week – Doctor Strange (Review score: 17 Points/2 Appearances; 8.5 Pts/App). Death cannot stop the Sorcerer Supreme. The mystery of who kills Doctor Strange begins with a surprise appearance by the classic—more groovy—Doctor Strange of days past. The good doctor reveals he had split and hid part of his soul, to be released upon any suspicious assassination attempt on him. He also continues his guest appearance in the Symbiote Spider-Man series.

Antagonist of the Week – Doctor Doom (Review score: 12 Points/1 Appearance; 12.0 Pts/App). Doctor Doom successfully guards the galaxy from the the planet-sized threat of Dormammu. But he reveals a devious team-up with Sister Talionis that shows his ultimate goal was the acquisition of more magical power. Despite his absorption of Dormammu’s magic, Doom still covets the allegiance of the mutants and Excelsior, Emperor Hulkling’s cosmic sword.

Top Characters (by review score). Doctor Strange (17); Captain America, Nightcrawler (16); Reptil, Wolverine/James Howlett (15); Doctor Doom (12); Venom/Eddie Brock (10); Penance (9); Moon Knight, Mr. Fantastic (8)
