Weekly Marvel Review: September 15, 2021 (Week 37)

Kang looks to be making a late push in the Antagonists’ ranks. With three more appearances in the last five weeks—and 49 total points spanning six overall apps—Kang now ranks as the sixth best antagonist for the year. Those numbers would ultimately be higher if he did not have so many variations of him running around the timestream. Apart from Kang prime, the young version of Nathanial Richards featuring in the current Kang series officially differentiates himself from the other variants and is deemed worthy of inclusion in the database. Kang’s two other well known identities—Immortus and Rama Tut—also get added to the database with starring appearances in the latest Fantastic Four issueThanos’ father, A’Lars, makes an appearance for his induction into the database.

Book the Week – X-Men: Trial of Magneto #2 (Review score: 79 Points; 31 Characters). Magneto does not take kindly to accusations that he may have had something to do with the Scarlet Witch’s recent death. With the help of Hope, he breaks free from Professor X’s psychic probing and launches a surprise attack on the visiting Avengers. But the final surprise comes when Wanda returns to Krakoa and warmly embraces her former husband, Vision.

Hero of the Week – Iron Man (Review score: 13 Points/2 Appearance; 6.5 Pts/App). Iron Man’s suit protects him from Magneto’s initial attack, but is reminded once more that there are other ways Magneto can get the best of him. In his own title, Iron Man infiltrates Galactus’ abandoned headquarters and prepares for Korvac’s approaching assault. But when the battle is joined, Tony quickly loses Avro-X, his recent ally against Stilt-Man, quickly falls to Korvac’s cosmic attack.

Antagonist of the Week – Rama Tut (Review score: 11 Points/2 Appearances; 5.5 Pts/App). Rama Tut, Kang’s ancient pharaoh personality, is the next variation that Kid Kang visits on his journey through his personal history. He is also the latest Kang to betray him by murdering that which he loves. This latest betrayal sets Kid Kang on a mission to destroy Kang. Tut also appears as one of four Kang personalities to gather in Fantastic Four and set out to gather time displaced treasures within the Baxter Building.

Performance of the Week – Gladiator, Shuri, Smasher (Review score: 12 Points/1 Appearance; 12.0 Pts/App). The Last Annihilation comes up against the might of the intergalactic empire of Wakanda. A small force of Wakandans comes to the aid of the Shi’ar to protect their homeworld, Aerie. The two empires strike an uneasy truce to overcame the Mindless Ones with Gladiator, Shuri and Smasher standing out as the MVPs of the battle.

Top Characters (by review score). Iron Man (13); Gladiator, Shuri, Smasher (12); Rama Tut, Spider-Woman (11); Deathbird, Mr. Fantastic (10); Captain America, Kang, Kid Kang, White Widow (9)
