Marvel taps into the unlimited potential of its digital comics subscription service by launching Infinity Comics. The new stories, exclusive to the Marvel Unlimited service, offer a chance for some of Marvel’s top creatives to tell quick short stories presented in a “visionary vertical format” meant to be read on phones and tablets. With its launch, Marvel releases several primer issues for its top characters, a Black Widow comic, a “X-Men Unlimited” series, a series featuring Skottie Young’s Little Marvels characters—as made famous by numerous variant covers. The real winners of the launch include Shang-Chi, who drops all four issues of his Infinity miniseries, and the scene stealing land shark, Jeff, who receives his first headlining book.
Book the Week – Savage Avengers #24 (Review score: 107 Points; 30 Characters). The era-spanning battle between Conan and Kulan Gath heats up and not even Marvel’s greatest heroes can help the barbarian. That’s not for lack of trying as the X-Men, Avengers and other allies team up to face the sorcerer. Kulan Gath dispatches them all until only Conan and Doctor Strange are left alive. Now, in this savage future, Conan stands alone in Doctor Doom’s armor and receives a surprise ally in Kang.
Hero of the Week – Shang-Chi (Review score: 41 Points/5 Appearances; 8.2 Pts/App). Shang-Chi kicks down the door of the Infinity Comics and his own solo title for a total of five appearances. He teams up with White Fox in the four issue Infinity story and continues putting himself at odds with Marvel’s heroes. This time he runs afoul of the Fantastic Four by breaking into their home and hitching a ride into the Negative Zone.
Antagonist of the Week – Doctor Doom (Review score: 13 Points/2 Appearances; 6.5 Pts/App). Doctor Doom also makes demands for safe passage into a foreign world this week. Determined to enter Otherworld, he shows up in Excalibur prepared to enter the Krakoan gate using a (potentially kidnapped) Latverian mutant baby. Captain Britain and the rest of the realm’s mutant protectors refuse to allow Doom to use the child and agree to escort him to Avalon so he can investigate Morgan Le Fay’s absence. In Savage Avengers, Doom performs a selfless act to aid Conan in his battle by lending the barbarian his suit of armor.
