Weekly Marvel Review: August 04, 2021 (Week 31)

August picks up right where July left. Spider-Man’s deadliest foes surround him in Sinister War, symbiotic showdowns in Extreme Carnage and another entry in the annual backup stories that lead to the “Infinity Heist.” As far as new books of interest go, Kushala, the Sorcerer Supreme and Ghost Rider from years past, receives a one-shot in which she takes on a new mantle—the Spirit Rider. She gets added to the Fantasy Comic League database along with Anastasia Kravinoff.

FCL Podcast 10 – Drawn to the Midtown Draft

Book the Week – Sinister War #2 (Review score: 65 Points; 27 Characters). Kravinoff is the latest member of Spider-Man’s rogues gallery to join the fray in the final chapter of Nick Spencer’s run on Amazing Spider-Man. Now that Kindred has ‘bugged’ all the villains to do his biding, Spider-Man fights for his life as the different crews take a crack at cracking his ribs.

Hero of the Week – Deadpool (Review score: 18 Points/1 Appearance; 18.0 Pts/App). Deadpool continues to languish in the year 2021. He currently sits in the 21st spot for overall heroes. His recent series ended unceremoniously and ever since has been relying on cameo appearances. Now, he looks to turn that around with the new Black, White & White anthology series. The mini has been a good source of points for the likes of Wolverine and Carnage, and now the Merc with a Mouth stands to receive the same boost.

Antagonist of the Week – Kindred (Review score: 5 Points/1 Appearance; 5.0 Pts/App). A slow week for antagonists grants Kindred the opportunity to earn an Antagonist of the Week with only five points. He receives the title thanks to the latest Sinister War issue showing him bringing together the various sinister teams to further punish Peter Parker.

Performance of the Week – Silence/Andi Benton (Review score: 16 Points/1 Appearance; 16.0 Pts/App). Andi Benton can not rid herself of the symbiotes. After an attack that almost leaves her died, she returns in the latest Extreme Carnage issue with a new symbiotic sidekick. Created using a piece of the old Scream symbiote and Flash Thompson’s Anti-Venom suit, Andi becomes Silence.

Top Characters (by review score). Deadpool (18); Doctor Strange, Silence (16); Iron Man (13); Captain America, Captain Marvel, Spirit Rider (12); Hulk/Jennifer Walters (10); Prince of Power (9); Ghost Rider/Johnny Blaze, Marvel Girl, Rogue, Thor (8)
