Weekly Marvel Review: July 28, 2021 (Week 30)

A week of endings ends the month of July. Beta Ray Bill and Black Knight: Curse of the Ebony Blade bid their latest series adieu. However, the biggest send off belongs to young Cable and his 12-issue book. The time displaced Nathan Summers has been kicking around since 2018’s Extermination event where he forced the original X-Men back to their own time. Now, the tables have turned and he must return to his own future. Speaking of unpleasant returns, the Eternals learn that their perpetual resurrections come at the cost of a human’s life. A heavy burden that comes at the end of the first arc of their latest series—and possible finale?—with the next issue yet to be solicited.

FCL Podcast 09 – Cable’s Weapons Caches

Book the Week – Cable #12 (Review score: 72 Points; 11 Characters). The X-Men play musical Cables. The young Cable gets replaced by his older self and breaks up the happy Summers family dynamic Cyclops and Jean had been fostering. Before leaving though, he completes his current mission of saving the kidnapped mutant babies. The final issue brings together a crew of Cable’s closest friends—including Deadpool, Domino—and family members, such as Hope, to stop Stryfe’s baby-stealing operation.

Hero of the Week – Spider-Man/Peter Parker (Review score: 16 Points/3 Appearances; 5.33 Pts/App). Spider-Man breaks the 300-point barrier with the start of Peter David and Greg Land’s fourth collaboration on a Symbiote Spider-Man series. This time, the flashback story features Symbiote Spidey and Black Cat crossing paths with Karnilla, the Norn Queen—Hela’s current wife as seen in the Mighty Valkyries series. Spider-Man reaches 300 points with this series, but adds seven additional points in two more titles, including his latest Amazing issue.

Antagonist of the Week – Mordred (Review score: 9 Points/1 Appearance; 9.0 Pts/App). Mordred, a man out of time, tries to merge Arthurian artifacts with modern day technology and pays the price. The Black Knight finale reveals that Morded had created the Listenr App to feed off of mankind’s misery and constant complaining. But Mordred did not count on the connectivity power of the internet, because the Black Knight being plugged into the Ebony Crown via Listenr allows him to be reborn and put an end to Mordred’s scheme.

Top Characters (by review score). Spider-Man/Peter Parker (16); Wolverine (15); Black Cat (14); Black Widow (12); Cable/Young (11); Beta Ray Bill, Cable (10); Mordred (9); Daredevil, Ikaris, Human Torch, Thing (8)
