Weekly Marvel Review: July 21, 2021 (Week 29)

The age old story of the creation turning on its creator ties together the three new additions to the Fantasy Comic League database this week. The classic example of this trope being Dr. Frankenstein’s monster. The Marvel version of the character makes a reappearance in the first issue of Moon Knight’s new series. Though Abomination’s origin in the comics is slightly different, the Abomination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was created by General Thunderbolt Ross as a way to challenge the Hulk; which of course backfires. The Abomination of the comics makes his first appearance since 2017. Finally, Scorpia meets her overall 36 appearance minimum. She is a riff on the original Scorpion who was created by, and then betrayed, Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson.

FCL Podcast 08 – Cats of Personality

Book the Week – Guardians of the Galaxy #16 (Review score: 58 Points; 16 Characters). “The Last Annihilation” story kicks into high gear with Dormammu sending Mindless Ones across the galaxy. The Guardians’ divided forces and Emperor Hulkling and Wiccan all confront their own wave of attacks. Nova and Star-Lord each get a chance to show off their generic Cosmic abilities, while Rocket and Gamora help exemplify how a Suit power works in space.

Hero of the Week – Thor (Review score: 13 Points/1 Appearance; 13.0 Pts/App). Thor’s Annual sees the Asgardian God face off with an alt-universe version of himself where he had put an end to Loki’s schemes earlier in his life. This preemptive punitive act leads to a ripple effect that saw Thor become a darker ruler, one that mainstream Thor confronts with the help of the League of Realms and Hawkeye.

Antagonist of the Week – Absorbing Man (Review score: 8 Points/1 Appearance; X Pts/App). Crusher Creel has been testing the limits of his absorption powers while a member of Gamma Flight, proving that he’s more than just the wrecking ball he swings. Al Ewing has also been showing a softer side of the character with a heavy focus on Creel’s devotion to his wife Titania. It’s those two driving factors that earn Absorbing Man an Intellect power for his faith in his ability to absorb a Teleportation pad and its powers.

Performance of the Week – Moon Knight (Review score: 12 Points/1 Appearance; 12.0 Pts/App). Moon Knight begins the ninth volume of his solo title in typical Moon Knight fashion: defying Khonsu, starting his own cult and cleansing the night of ghoulish creatures. This issue he takes out vampires, Vermin clones and even arm wrestles Frankenstein’s monster. However, a new moon-based adversary and disciple of Khonsu is on the rise with the introduction of Hunter’s Moon, a doctor-by-day and high-priest-by-night.

Top Characters (by review score). Thor (13); Captain Marvel, Moon Knight, Reptil (12); Spider-Man/Miles Morales (11); Absorbing Man, Conan, Nova/Richard Rider, Skaar (8); Enchantress, Mantis, Quasar/Wendell Vaughn (7)
