Weekly Marvel Review: June 16, 2021 (Week 24)

With Father’s Day right around the corner, the phrase “like father, like son” has never had a more appropriate week. The Fantasy Comic League begins tracking two new characters, both sons of prominent characters carrying on the legacy of their fathers. The Last Son of Kraven notches his 18th appearance within three years and therefor finally meets the minimum threshold for inclusion in the database. Dylan Brock, the second addition, bonds with the Venom symbiote in Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman’s big Venom finale. Up until this point, Dylan has been considered a civilian and not a true adventurer. But there is no denying his new role in the comics now that he has his father’s blessing to take on the Venom mantle.

FCL Podcast 03 – “I Call My God ‘Daddy’”

Book the Week – Planet Size X-Men #1 (Review score: 99 Points; 43 Characters). The mutant race just became the Sol system’s daddy. Emma Frost reveals the Hellfire Gala’s big fireworks: Magneto’s plan to terraform Mars. The special one-shot book details how Krakoa’s Omega-level mutants—including Storm, Hope, Iceman and Exodus—come together to heal the fourth planet from the sun and relocate the mutant island of Arakko to Mars. A move not wholly appreciated by many humans of Earth.

Hero of the Week – Venom/Eddie Brock (Review score: 19 Points/1 Appearance; 19.0 Pts/App). Eddie Brock’s Venom completes his long journey from being a sinister symbiote to becoming a cosmic champion. But being the new King in Black takes its toll on the man inside the suit. Eddie rapidly ages when he uses his new omnipresent abilities to keep peace across the universe. Luckily, his other journey—learning about his son’s existence to becoming a positive father figure—provides him with an heir to the Venom symbiote.

Antagonist of the Week – Fenris (Review score: 7 Points/1 Appearance; 7.0 Pts/App). The Hellfire Gala offers an opportunity for X-Corp to meet with potential business partners, but one such prospect is roundly rejected by XCO Monet St. Croix. Fenris, the Nazi business siblings, come to the party for business purposes. Though the mutants refuse a meeting with Fenris Consulting, they find a willing party with Sarah St. John of Noblesse Pharmaceuticals. That still does not stop the twins from splitting up and trying to invade X-Corp’s headquarters.

Performance of the Week – Magneto (Review score: 10 Points/2 Appearance; 5.0 Pts/App). One of Marvel’s top dads—at least from a statistical point of view—pulls the father of all moves when he orchestrates the colonization of Mars. Though it involves the help from a handful of specific Omega mutants, the plan was all Magneto’s idea. He brings the motion to the Quiet Council, seeks logistical advice from Forge, and reaches out to Arakko for their assistance in relocating their island to a new home. A series of impressive feats from mutantdom’s heavy hitters, all made possible thanks to Magneto’s glorious vision.

Top Characters (by review score). Venom/Eddie Brock (19); Captain America, Hyperion (12); Angel, Black Widow, Doctor Spectrum, Magneto, Nighthawk, Venom/Dylan Brock (10); Storm (9)
