Weekly Marvel Review: June 09, 2021 (Week 23)

For the second week in a row, no new characters get added to the Fantasy Comic League database. Surprising considering that the latest issue of the X-Men comic features a staggering 63 distinct characters. The week overall turns out to be a pretty low scoring event. Only nine comics have characters from the prime universe appearing in them. And of those nine comics, only nine characters score five or more points.

Book the Week – X-Men #21 (Review score: 83 Points; 63 Characters). Five dozen characters are in attendance for the grand unveiling of the newest X-Men team. The reveal takes center stage in an issue where the average Point per Character is 1.32 points. The new team members—Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Rogue, Sunfire, Wolverine, Synch and Polaris—are the main characters to earn more than one point. They earn a Character Development for forming the new team, and then most get a power credit for their show of strength to the Hellfire guests.

Hero of the Week – Power Princess (Review score: 11 Points/1 Appearance; 11 Pts/App). I am starting to feel uncomfortable with counting the Squadron Supreme of America characters in the Hero category. They all seem to revel in their ruthlessness and celebrate their murders. Not the most heroic of traits. None of them seem to be as bloodthirsty as Power Princess who keeps racking up the Defeats Antagonist points. She receives the latest featured story in Heroes Reborn, displays her collection of petrified pantheons, and goes toe-to-toe with a reawakened Thor.

Antagonist of the Week – Korvac (Review score: 12 Points/1 Appearance; 12 Pts/App). Korvac continues to torment Iron Man and manages to do so with Iron Man being absent for the second issue in a row of his solo title. Korvac sets out to correct the original Human Torch’s body, which had been recently replaced with Stark technology. However, instead of being thankful and obedient, the Torch turns on Korvac who is saved by Controller, his devoted follower.

Top Characters (by review score). Korvac (12); Power Princess (11); Conan, Rictor (7); Howard the Duck, Human Torch/Jim Hammond, Marvel Girl (6); Doctor Voodoo, Emma Frost (5)
