To quote another popular piece of Disney entertainment: “This is the Way.” The merry mutants of Krakoa continue to live an immortal life of luxury, but Nightcrawler, their resident theologian, worries they live an immoral life as well. Kurt battles with the carefree approach to death he witnesses, be it in the Crucible or in the field when Pixie willingly sacrifices herself to a shotgun blast to the face. He turns to numerous characters for advice on how to establish a new ‘way’ of life for the X-Men. New characters added to the Fantasy Comic League database include Spider-Man antagonist, Desmond Charne, aka Mirage; Mordred; Chondu the Mystic; Khora of the Burning Heart; Slab; Match; and Medusa.
Book the Week – Women of Marvel #1 (Review score: 80 Points; 39 Characters). Ten years after the first volume of Women of Marvel, a second anthology book celebrating some of Marvel’s modern ma’ams hits the stands and spotlights some of their queens (Emma Frost and Medusa), their femme fatales (Lady Deathstrike and Mystique), and their gorgeous green gals (Hulk and Gamora). Other characters to receive a short story include Hela, Misty Knight and Marvel Girl herself, Jean Grey.
Hero of the Week – Marvel Girl (Review score: 16 Points/4 Appearances; 4.0 Pts/App). Jean’s biggest performance for the week comes in Benjamin Percy and Garry Brown’s X-Force series which sees her team with her former X-Force teammate Kid Omega to battle his inner demon. Her return to the book nets her a Team-Up point since she ditched the black ops term earlier in the series. She also appears in the aforementioned Women of Marvel, plus a cameo in S.W.O.R.D. and Way of X for a total of four appearances, tops for all Marvel characters.
Antagonist of the Week – Carnage (Review score: 10 Points/1 Appearance; 10.0 Pts/App). An anthology book opens up the possibility for a lot of points, and Carnage proves that yet again with his second issue of Carnage: Black, White & Blood. The first story deals with the fallout of King in Black and the symbiote’s latest death at the hands of Venom’s new symbiote followers. In two additional stories, the symbiote seeks revenge of a Ravencroft guard and then takes a new host in the frozen wilderness of Canada.
Performance of the Week – Kid Omega (Review score: 9 Points/1 Appearance; 9.0 Pts/App). Quentin Quire earns a Performance of the Week thanks to his victory over the mental demon that has been plaguing him the previous issues. This issue wraps up the arc that has seen Quentin comes to term with his self image and confidence issues. With the help of his Stepford girlfriend he kept the X-Force team book afloat and engaging pretty much on his own.
Top Characters (by review score). Marvel Girl (16); Spider-Man/Peter Parker (14); Spider-Woman (13); Carnage, Magneto, Nightcrawler (10); Hulk/Jennifer Walters, Kid Omega, Spider-Man/Miles Morales (9); Captain Marvel, Viv Vision (8)
