Marvel shows that they are all heart in the latest week of comics. Darkhawk and Iron Fist have a heart-to-heart with their Heart of the Hawk and Heart of the Dragon books, the former of which is a one-shot anthology featuring a story from the character’s past, present and future. Thor rules with his heart when passing judgement upon a defeated Dr. Donald Blake in the conclusion to Donny Cates’ “Prey” storyline in the ongoing Thor title. Elektra displays her softer side as well in Daredevil after taking a recently orphaned girl under her wing, and the Human Torch follows his heart when recommitting to his Spyrican soulmate Sky in Fantastic Four. Polaris wins over the hearts of the fans and claims victory in the recent X-Men Vote. The Fantasy Comic League begins tracking the Black Fox after he makes his 36th overall appearance.
Book the Week – Guardians of the Galaxy #13 (Review score: 73 Points; 14 Characters). The Guardians of the Galaxy waste no time in patrolling the galaxy as the latest cosmic team of superheroes. Two teams split up to investigate separate conflicts: a mysterious Skrull fire cult and the Progenitors’ invasion of Hala, the Kree-Skull Alliance’s Throneworld. Nova and Star-Lord’s team show up to support Emperor Hulkling and Wiccan and quickly dispatch the Progenitors, but Doctor Doom appears and spoils their victory.
Hero of the Week – Darkhawk (Review score: 19 Points/1 Appearance; 19.0 Pts/App). Darkhawk celebrates his 30-year history with an exciting special in which he flashes 14 powers, including the skilled use of the Darkhawk Amulet and Armor. Despite the action-filled issue, he fails to achieve the Fantasy Comic League cycle by missing out on a Leads Team point. His Character Development provides a hint at the future of the character when Chris Powell relinquishes the Darkhawk Amulet and mantle onto an unknown successor.
Antagonist of the Week – Doctor Doom (Review score: 9 Points/1 Appearance; 9.0 Pts/App). In typical fashion, Doctor Doom makes his first appearance in 2021 in grand fashion. He conjures a storm of magic and technology to force the Guardians of the Galaxy to their knees in a way only Doom can. The perpetually bitter antagonist seems to take particular aim at the “King of Space” and “Master of the Sun,” questioning his right to claim such prestigious titles and the Star-Sword for himself.
Performance of the Week – Thor (Review score: 11 Points/1 Appearance; 11.0 Pts/App). A half-dozen characters score 11 points in their sole appearance for the week, but Thor claims the title for his defeat of Dr. Donald Blake. He takes pity on Blake and spares his life despite the destruction the tormented character recently carved through Asgard. Although, leaving Blake’s fate up to Loki, his other misguided brother, may prove not be the best idea.
Top Characters (by review score). Darkhawk (19); Wolverine (17); Spider-Man/Peter Parker (13); Dorma, Invisible Woman, Lightspeed, Mass Master, Mr. Fantastic, Thor (11); Alex Power, Moondragon (10)
