Weekly Marvel Review: July 4, 2018 (Week 27)

Step aside Captain America, there’s a new American hero this Fourth of July! Ms. Marvel puts up her second “Hero of the Week” performance two weeks after her first one of the year. The young champion also scores a new personal best 18 points across three books. She is a Save Civilian short of hitting for the Fantasy Cycle with three weeks left to go in the month. With Kamala represented the younger generation of heroes at the top of the Fantasy Power Rankings, Doctor Strange follows in second for the older class of heroes. Strange conjures up 14 points with Captain America hot on his tail with 13 points in third. Steve Rogers appears in the most books for the week, showing up in four titles, most importantly the start of his new series written by Ta-Nehisi Coate.

The Champions and Avengers dominate the Power Rankings at the start of the new month. Eight of the top 11 heroes are registered members of one of the two super groups. Wasp is the next Champion to make the list. Nadia manages 10 points split between her adventure in the space with her Champions teammates and in the Microverse with Ant-Man. Iron Man and Nova are the third members of their respective teams to show up. They tie with Daredevil and Deadpool for fifth place at nine points apiece. Deadpool solo issue sees the biggest numbers for drafted heroes as both the Champions and Avengers make cameo appearances in the book. Skottie Young’s second issue of the new series features a hefty 40 points for the Fantasy Comic League.

Thor and She-Hulk are teaming up in Avengers to track down an Asgardian weapon capable of defeating a Celestial, while also learning more about Odin’s prehistoric team of Avengers. The mighty duo remains cuffed together in the rankings with eight points. They tie with Ant-Man in rounding out the top performances for the week. The disappointment of the week, and potentially month, comes from new Fantasy recruit Dazzler. She fails to show up in the latest Astonishing X-Men despite her membership on the team being highlighted as a point of interest.

Hero and power usages are a combination of all Fantasy Comic League divisions: Asgard, Danger Room, Do You Even Comic Book, Latveria, Midtown, Multiverse, Negative Zone and Wakanda. League participants should cross-reference the official points with their hero roster and drafted powers for their heroes’ scores. Please make sure to tweet any questions or comments to the official #FantasyComicLeague tag and @MixedMarvelArts for discussion!
