Weekly Marvel Review: December 28, 2022 (Week 52)

Shang-Chi ends the year a winner. Not from a Fantasy Comic League perspective, mind you. He finished just outside of the Top 20 performances with a review score of 119, six points fewer than the prior year. But he does win the Game of Rings and retains the right to wield the Ten Rings. He also learns that his estranged sibling, Sister Hammer, has been watching his back as Red Cannon, the current leader of the Red Dot Collective’s criminal organization.

Book the Week – X-Terminators #4 (Review score: 49 Points; 34 Characters). Dazzler and her vampire-killing gal pals escape the Collector’s Museum and crash land back on Krakoa, interrupting a friendly game of baseball. Brought before they Quiet Council, they don’t need to answer to just Krakoa’s leadership, but the Vampire Nation’s ruler as well. Dracula, swayed by their argument that the vampires they killed were defectors, agrees to help them find Al’hex, Dazzler’s traitorous, vampiric ex-boyfriend.

Hero of the Week – Spider-Man/Peter Parker (Review score: 15 Points/2 Appearances; 7.5 Pts/App). It’s official, Peter Parker fails to top repeat his Top Hero of the Year performance. He finishes 19 points behind Iron Man and 5 points behind Wolverine to finish in third place overall. He earns 47 fewer points in 25 fewer Appearances when compared to his prior year performance. However, he does top the rest of the characters in two categories: most.Hero of the Week titles with 9 and the most Save Civilians with 10.

Antagonist of the Week – Kang (Review score: 14 Points/1 Appearance; 14.0 Pts/App). Kang rounds out the year, previews the upcoming major moments for the Marvel Universe, and earns his first Antagonist of the Week title in Timeless. With his cinematic debut looming and a potential conflict with the Avengers in the comics, the Master of Time should easily beat his four Appearances this year. Kang made the most of those few Appearances, averaging 7.75 Points per Appearance.

Top Characters (by review score). Spider-Man/Peter Parker (15); Kang (14); Chasm, Goblin Queen (13); Black Widow, Hawkeye/Clint Barton, Magik, Marvel Girl, Shang-Chi, Synch (11)
