Weekly Marvel Review: November 23, 2022 (Week 47)

The line between hero and antagonist blurs for many Marvel characters in the Fantasy Comic League. Beast represents the biggest example of this in recent times. Dr. McCoy, Krakoa’s Head of Security, pushes the limits of his responsibilities, going so far as setting up a secret prison in space where he runs tests on his captives. The Daredevils break into the Myrmidon, a supervillain prison, to recruit anybody who is willing to join the Fist. Stilt-Man quickly joins up, with Agony, Fancy Dan and Stegron tagging along in pursuit of freedom as well. Ben Reilly, now known as Chasm, is on the verge of crossing over into the Antagonist category with the start of the “Dark Web” story, plaguing Peter Parker once more. This time he’s bringing his girlfriend along with him, Janine Godbe, now known as Hallow’s Eve.

Book the Week – All-Out Avengers #3 (Review score: 42 Points; 9 Characters). The Avengers’ mysterious missions continue, and this time they team up with another unlikely ally, the Red Skull. Iron Man and Black Panther get closer to the truth about their teammates’ memory lapses with the fate of a mysterious narrator relying on them figuring out the truth.

Hero of the Week – Daredevil/Matt Murdock (Review score: 12 Points/1 Appearance; 12.0 Pts/App). Matt Murdock scores his first Hero of the Week despite headlining the “Dark Reign” event at the beginning of the year. His 12 points represent his second-best performance of the year following a 14-point performance in Week 37, the only week in which he showed up more than once. Daredevil’s first use of the Claws ability, granted to him by his newly-clawed gloves, gives him the one point edge over Genis-Vell and Ghost Rider.

Antagonist of the Week – Loki (Review score: 5 Points/1 Appearance; 5.0 Pts/App). Loki, earns his third Antagonist of the Week, thanks to a Character Development in Defenders: Beyond, in which he gives up the opportunity to escape from the Eighth Cosmos and live an unencumbered life of freedom. His third Antagonist of the Week ties him for second most titles on the year.

Top Characters (by review score). Daredevil/Matt Murdock (12); Genis-Vell, Ghost Rider/Robbie Reyes (11); Blade, Doctor Strange (10); Spirit Rider (8); Domino, Magik, Thor (7); Black Widow, Blue Marvel, Forge, Iron Man, Wolverine/James Howlett (6)
