Weekly Marvel Review: August 24, 2022 (Week 34)

Let the judgement begin. Strange alliances form as the people of Earth face their upcoming trials. Emma Frost strikes a deal with the Deviants. Peter Parker signs up to work for Norman Osborn at the new Oscorp. Ghost-Spider teams with an evil, alternate reality Gwen Stacy to save her mutliverse. Miles Morales teams up once more with his wayward uncle to return to the main reality. To paraphrase Dr. Peter Venkman, “dogs and cats living together… MASS HYSTERIA!”

Book the Week – A.X.E.: Judgement Day #3 (Review score: 121 Points; 47 Characters). When Captain America fails the initial judgement, you know things are not off to a good start. Mutants, a species known for unfair judgement, take the fight to the Progenitor in an attempt to destroy the Celestial before he makes any more rulings. However, one good turn deserves another, as the Progenitor deceives the attacking force. The Celestial tricks the mutants into thinking their sneak attack worked when in reality it was nothing more than an illusion.

Hero of the Week – Ghost-Spider (Review score: 12 Points/2 Appearances; 6.0 Pts/App). Ghost-Spider’s personal journey through the multiverse comes to an end. The rest of the Gwen-vengers sacrifice themselves to allow Ghost-Spider to travel back in time and prevent Finale from harvesting all of her followers’ meme energy. Gwen falls a Save Civilian short of hitting for the Fantasy Comic League cycle while securing her first Hero of the Week

Antagonist of the Week – Carnage (Review score: 9 Points/1 Appearance; 9.0 Pts/App). Carnage puts up another high-scoring, single appearance week. His 9 points are just shy of his 9.5 points/appearance average, the best for an Antagonist. He also earns his fourth Antagonist of the Week, putting him ahead of Doctor Octopus in that category.

Top Characters (by review score). Ghost-Spider (12); Wolverine/James Howlett (11); Spider-Man/Peter Parker (10); Carnage (9); Exodus, Falcon/Joaquín Torres, Shang-Chi, Spider-Man/Miles Morales (8); Genis-Vell, Ikaris, Leiko Wu, Mr. Fantastic, Shift (7)
