Weekly Marvel Review: March 03, 2021 (Week 09)

With all the symbiotes slithering around the Marvel Universe, it comes as no surprise that the Sonic power sees a lot of action. Though typically a power most associated with vocal characters such as Banshee, the heroes defending Earth are forced to employ Sonics in more creative ways. Captain America and Winter Soldier toss out sonic grenades, or as Bucky called them “The Beat,” in King in Black: Captain America. In King in Black: Gwenom vs. Carnage, Ghost-Spider relies on her musical background to drop her own sonic beat on the drums and free her friend from a symbiote. Given the symbiotes aversion to loud sound waves, one must wonder where Black Bolt is hiding since he could end this invasion with a mere whisper! Lauri-Ell, Captain Marvel’s half-sister and Hulkling’s lead Accuser, earns her sixth appearance since her debut last summer and gets added to the Fantasy Comic League review database.

Book the Week – Avengers #43 (Review score: 75 points; 21 characters). The Phoenix must not be familiar with running a March Madness style tournament bracket, because at the end of the latest Avengers issue six characters remain standing in the battle to become its latest host. But we know the Phoenix is playing favorites and favors Black Panther as its new host anyway. Despite that, Panther has received the biggest challenges so far. He defeats Wolverine in the beginning of this issue and ends the book on top of Avengers Mountain facing off with Captain America. The other remaining battles are Red Widow (who recently beat Black Knight) versus Shanna the She-Devil (who beat American Eagle) and Namor versus She-Hulk (who beat Valkyrie). Betting odds would surely favor a Black Panther versus Namor final battle.

Hero of the Week – Wolverine (Review score: 15 points; 5 Pts/App). Despite his elimination from the Phoenix Playoffs, Wolverine earns his second Hero of the Week title for 2021. The majority of his action comes from the Avengers title, but he earns an extra four points each from Power Pack and Runaways. Despite his aversion to what he called “kindergarten duty” in Runaways, Wolverine seems to have no problem mentoring or teaming up with young children.

Antagonist of the Week – Taskmaster (Review score: 11 points; 11 Pts/App). Taskmaster completes his takeover of the Antagonists rankings with his second Antagonist of the Week. His team of Thunderbolts may not have defeated the King in Black in their tie-in title, but they did manage to deceive Kingpin and survive their suicide mission. Now they plan on extorting more money out of the mayor of New York City and continue operating as the Kingpin’s Thunderbolts.

Performance of the Week – Ms. America (Review score: 14 Points; 14 Pts/App). America Chavez returns in a new ongoing title which focuses on her upbringing in the Washington Heights neighborhood with her her adoptive Santana family. While the issue begins on the West Coast and costars some of her Avengers teammates, the book flashes back to her past and quickly moves back to New York when a mysterious force field is put up around her family’s home. Her family being in jeopardy is not the only trouble she faces, and she experiences some power outages throughout the book too.
