Weekly Marvel Review: April 10, 2019 (Week 15)

Captain Marvel continued to take the fight to her greatest foe: Man. Spider-Man, Nuclear Man and being Manhandled by Rogue. While Carol managed to get the upper hand on Rogue, and for a moment Nuclear Man, she fell way short of topping Spider-Man for the top character for the week. Spider-Man earned a bloated 34 points compared to Captain Marvel’s score of 14, but he appeared in twice as many books as she did. The Amazing Spider-Man took home the top solo book with 30 review points due to the continued menagerie of villains gathered while Captain Marvel scored 28 points. Carol’s rebellion in Nuclear Man’s misogynistic wasteland launched their final assault and received a boost from Carol and Rogue joining forces and bodies, but this time under Carol’s own free will. The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl would have been a top contender for solo book of the week, but due to its tie-in to War of the Realms it had to settle for third-best event book of the week with 38 points.

Avengers: No Road Home‘s penultimate issue returned the series to the top of the event book performances. It scored 59 points and showed the extent of Nyx’s blackout powers with a cameo by Blue Marvel leading a team of characters in response. With one book left, the assorted stars of the book, including Vision, Hercules, Scarlet Witch and Spectrum, faced a fully powered Nyx. Asgardians of the Galaxy, a regular contender for team book of the week, tied into War of the Realms as well and just missed out on beating No Road Home with a review score of 58. The other War of the Realms book from the week, Journey Into Mystery, gathered another motley crew of characters led by Balder the Brave, and edged out the first Cult of Carnage issue with by one point (38-37). Since the majority of the team books tied into events, that left Invaders to claim the top spot for a team series with a score of 20 points. It revealed a past relationship between Namor and Professor X and earned the Atlantean King his first Antagonist of the Week title with eight points.
