Help Support The Heroes We Love: This month, we’re highlighting Pride, the type that goes beyond a single annual one-shot. This week we’re focusing on JSA by Jeff Lemire. This book has perhaps the highest concentration of queer characters in any DC title that is not Secret Six, given that it features Alan Scott, Todd Rice, Scandal Savage in primary roles. It does not do much to service these characters and their sexuality, but Scandal is leading the villains, Alan is front and center, and Todd Rice is one of the biggest mysteries of the series. Books like Wonder Woman have a larger queer cast than JSA, but you don’t see them getting much in the way of screen time. So you can read eight of the JSA, featuring these proud characters, over at DC Universe Infinite, when you subscribe to the Ultra Annual Level (which runs the price of $170 CAD).
Weekly Omissions – Absolute Flash #4
Hero Of The Week – Listen, most characters in the DC Universe will not break 40 Points this year. We’re scoring almost 750 of them and less than 100 will break that number in 2025. Bruce Wayne broke 40 Points in a single week, scoring 44 Points over 5 Appearances to claim Hero Of The Week. And despite some 15 Point Appearances in there, Bruce would not claim Performance. Zatanna edged him out, with a 16 Point Performance Of The Week.
Antagonist Of The Week – 2023’s Antagonist Of The Year runnerup, Slade Wilson, has been making his big comeback in the pages of Jonathan Layman’s Titans. I don’t love the story, and I don’t love the new take on Slade, but it’s nice to see the man back on top, scoring Antagonist Of The Week with an 8 Point Appearance.
Book Of The Week – Going from a series I don’t like, to possibly the best series on the stands right now, we’re gonna give the golden Book Of The Week to Ram V’s The New Gods #7, which brought in 70 Points over 23 Characters. This was one of the best portrayals of John Stewart I have ever read, and it’s nice to feature enough JLU characters that it can claim the top spot weekly, but I’m also ready for this book to ignore the JLU and go back to the core cast I’m falling in love with. Orion is the star, alongside Solaris.
Power Of The Week – Look, I wanted to highlight a bunch of powers from Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #40. From Bruce Influencing Superman to anger by flirting with Lois Lane, to Jim Gordon’s Investigations with Perry White. But let’s be honest. This week’s Power Of The Week is Suit. Because Bruce Wayne built a Kaiju fighting suit. And it’s awesome. The majority of his other power usages for the issue come from the Suit, which serves as the primary base Power that others like Explosive and Sonics stem from.
