Help Support The Heroes We Love: One of my favorite aspects of comic book reading is the fact that you often can’t just follow one series to get a full story anymore. Most stories are told over a collection of Miniseries, or two On-Going series that bleed into one another. This is obviously very new reader friendly and so this month we’ll be focused on highlighting some of the new offshoots of pre-existing Series. This week we’re going to highlight Fire and Ice: When Hell Freezes Over. This is the second Miniseries in the larger Fire and Ice saga that Joanne Starer has created. While the original Miniseries placed them in Smallville to challenge Bea’s larger than life impulses, this Series spins out of the Absolute Power Event where Bea and Tora switched powers. They exist in a fun nonconsequential low stakes part of the DC Universe, which is a nice feel in the current DC “All In” lineup. And you can read the opening salvos of the story at DC Universe Infinite, when you subscribe to the Ultra Annual Level (which runs the price of $170 CAD).
Weekly Omissions – Absolute Martian Manhunter #5, Absolute Wonder Woman #10, Batman: Dark Victory SDCC #1, DC KO SDCC Special #1, DC Vs. Vampires: World War V #11
Hero Of The Week – Upon entering 10th overall for DC Characters, an unexpected Hero scores his first Hero Of The Week. Michael Holt, aka Mister Terrific, finally rises to the top, bringing in 18 Points over 2 Appearances. Superman (2025) has really blown up his profile.
Antagonist Of The Week – And we have a another notable performance in this category, with a villain managing to score both Antagonist and Performance Of The Week. That Villain is none other than Eclipso, with a 13 Point performance.
Book Of The Week – It’s Justice League week, who do you think is sitting on top? Book Of The Week goes to Justice League Unlimited #9, which brought in a measly 87 Points over 33 Characters. A whole lot of heroes, standing around, doing dick all.
Power Of The Week – This week I’m going to highlight a common Power used across several series. That power is APPENDAGE, which also has a Defensive and Offensive breakdown. So when does each power break down into it’s specialty? Well, first we start with the scoring branch: If The Shade creates a shadowy Appendage and attacks, it would score Offensive first and then the Generic usage on a second use. If he forms the Appendage to threaten but not harm, he would get the generic usage (Weapon scores similarly). If he uses that Appendage to save his own life or that of another, it would score Defensive. There are occasionally complex situations that involve some deliberation over which Appendage breakdown is best, but it largely follows these rules.
