SCORING ANALYSIS
So let’s kick things off with some simple statistics.
After 3 issues, Scorpio generated 128 Points over 13 Scoring Characters (12 Heroes, 1 Antagonist).
These 128 Points are awarded from 7 Categories: APPEARANCE, POWERS USAGE, CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, TEAM-UPS, TEAMS LED, CIVILIANS SAVED, and ANTAGONISTS DEFEATED. Author, John Robinson, writes in the Afterword that this isn’t a Superhero Comic and you can be damn sure of that because there wasn’t a single Civilian Saved Point awarded.
Unsurprisingly, the lead scorers were our protagonists: Daniel Shim (26 Points) and Naomi Miles (22 Points). Rounding out the top 3 was the central antagonist of these issues, a character known as Mal’Churras/Carlos (19 Points). By the end of these 3 issues, 4 of the 13 Scoring Characters would be dead, but since this is comic books, death doesn’t necessarily mean the ending of a Scoring. Xiao Shim is dead for the entirety of the central plot and yet came in 4th overall with 14 Points accrued via Flashbacks.
The biggest surprise was the lack of real heavy hitters amongst the Zodiac branded Heroes of this story. With the exception of the deceased Shim, Libra was the highest ranking Zodiac at 8 Points while Virgo is the lowest Scoring Character with a single Point. Lucas and Quincy took most of the action beats that should have belonged to the Zodiacs; both men brought in 10 Points. Now that they’re dead though, those points can go to more important characters.
Lastly, I would like to shout out the surprise high-roller. Cameron Jones would bring in 7 Points despite being a non-combatant. Fantasy Comic League scoring Powers like Business, Deception, and Influence are powerful tools in a story centered around billionaires and ancient sources of power.
Your average first few issues of a Marvel/DC Series tends to pull in around 15-40 Points an Issue. Scorpio brought in 37 to 46 Points an Issue, so this creative team is doing a better job at creating scoring opportunities for their characters than your average title. So please allow Scorpio the chance to entertain you.
