Weekly Marvel Review: January 05, 2022 (Week 01)

Though not the highest scoring book of the week, Inferno stands out as the most impactful story. Of the 18 characters, 11 receive a Character Development point, with the majority of those belonging to the Quiet Council for learning the true secret of Krakoa. Outside of them, Mystique receives one for turning Moira human, which earns her her own Character Development. And then Cypher in turn gets one for saving Moira’s life. The other big moments from the week include Cyclops taking on the mantle of Captain Krakoa in the latest X-Men title; Wanda absorbing the power of Chthon in the Darkhold finale; and Shang-Chi learning about his parents’ meeting, in a move that brings the comics more in line with his recent movie.

Book of the Week – Captain Marvel #35 (Review score: 73 Points; 20 Characters). Carol and the Marvels’ get backup from the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Avengers in their fight against Vox Supreme. This is in addition to the new Binary character, a mysterious and silent sentient energy form Carol had created. The extra support could not have come at a better time as Vox Supreme called in a few dozen more Vox-suited antagonists.

Hero of the Week – Iron Man (Review score: 23 Points/4 Appearances; 5.75 Pts/App). Iron Man gets the edge over Captain America because of his appearance in the Darkhold finale. The duo appear side-by-side in Tony’s three other Appearances, including their team-up book. Iron Man earns three Team-Ups and two Defeats Antagonists with his top powers being three uses each of Flight and Tech.

Antagonist of the Week – Doctor Octopus (Review score: 12 Points/1 Appearances; 12.0 Pts/App). Doc Ock goes above and Beyond in his one Appearance to begin the year. He infiltrates the Beyond Corporation after learning that they’ve been gutting the defunct Parker Industries that Otto created during his time in Peter Parker’s body. Knowing all of their secrets, he manages to get the upper hand (tentacle?) and defeat Beyond’s Spider-Mascot, Ben Reilly.

Top Characters (by review score). Iron Man (23); Captain America (20); Scarlet Witch (15); Doctor Octopus (12); Wasp/Janet Van Dyne (11); Magneto, Spider-Man/Ben Reilly, Storm (10); Black Widow, Phyla-Vell (9); Elektra, Mystique, Professor X (8)
