All the Marvel ladies get another anthology one shot. Though the solicitations only call out Jennifer “Hulk” Walters, Captain Peggy Carter and Marrow (the latter two not counted in our preview estimates), the cover for Women of Marvel suggests top tier characters like Storm, Shuri and Jane “Valkyrie” Foster will also make a cameo at least. Captain Marvel—the only other female character outside of Storm and She-Hulk in the Fantasy Comic League’s top three appearance estimates for April—should remain a contender with Avengers book double dipping in the month and her solo issue expanding upon her magical night with Doctor Strange. Other books and characters dropping two books in the month include The Amazing Spider-Man and Fantastic Four.
Team-Ups: In addition to their own title, the Avengers, and not the X-Men as one would think, drop by the latest issue of the Children of the Atom. Though uncertain which characters could appear in that issue, the safe bet remains Captain America, Captain Marvel and Iron Man representing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Iron Man continues his team-up with Hellcat in his solo series, but this month, Moondragon joins them to give Hellcat’s minor telepathic abilities a boost. More ladies that come through in their allies’ time of need include Pixie (with Wolverine’s help) continuing her Runaways ride along; Psylocke returns Captain Britain back to her Excalibur teammates; Elsa Bloodstone’s latest investigations lead her to cross paths with Black Knight’s curse Ebony Sword. Conan teams up with Rhino and runs afoul of Spider-Man in Savage Avengers.
New Series: Pixie gets at least a second appearance this month when she joins Nightcrawler in setting up an official mutant religion in Si Spurrier and Bob Quinn’s Way of X series. Spinning out of “King in Black,” the Mighty Valkyries launch a new series when Loki approaches Valkyrie about a beast stalking the souls of Midgard. The next Marvels series kicks off with an expansive roster including Captain America, Spider-Man and Storm, among many others. Marvel’s cosmic corner gets a Darkhawk one shot issue featuring three short stories and, though not the start of a new series, Al Ewing’s Guardians of the Galaxy continues with a new roster and new mission.
Final Issues: Two big series conclude in the month of April. The King in Black event ends with Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman’s finale and their penultimate Venom issue. Black Panther’s galactic war reaches it’s climax and brings an end to this cosmic chapter in Wakanda’s history. When a new Black Panther series begins in the future, will the technologically-advanced nation continue reaching for the stars or remain Earthbound after witnessing its ideals corrupted on a universal scale?
