Weekly Marvel Review: February 27, 2019 (Week 09)

There is no honor among thieves, and no love lost between Marvel’s biggest antagonists. The biggest Fantasy Comic League events in the final week of February all revolve around the antagonists fighting each other. The Amazing Spider-Man, the biggest book of the week, focuses on Kraven preparing for his next big hunt. Its 37 points come in large part to the Hunter’s capture of 15 animal-based baddies, including members of the Serpent Society, Beetle and Rhino. Spider-Man is nothing more than an afterthought in his solo title. Captain America, the second-biggest solo title with 31 points, features Baron von Strucker making an example of his own bad guy prisoners in front of Steve Rogers. Fantastic Four and X-Force match Amazing’s point total to claim the top team books for the week with Fantastic continuing the trend of antagonist altercations. Doctor Doom, the Antagonist of the Week, springs his trap on Galactus, trapping the World Eater and turning him into a battery for his kingdom.

Black Panther earns the Hero of the Week with 14 points despite his absence from any of the top books. His Black Panther vs. Deadpool event comes to a somewhat predictable end, with the two characters putting aside their differences to save Willie Lumpkin. The 20-point book falls short of Avengers: No Road Home‘s 25 points for the event book of the week. Deadpool and Mr. Fantastic have top performances as well with 9 points each, while a pair of Captains (America and Marvel) score 8 points apiece to close out February.
