Marvel kicked off 2019 with a bang and released 14 books which registered 304 points for the revamped Fantasy Comic League review system. In an effort to give as many statistics as possible, the FCL started the year by reviewing all character appearances and will continue to do so in 2019. The biggest issue came from the X-Men as they continued their quest to reclaim their place as Marvel’s top brand. Uncanny X-Men featured 23 characters and an impressive 74 points. The student body returned from their trip within Legion’s mind, despite the elder X-Men’s disagreement on whether they should save the young students from the psychic realm. By the end of the issue, the showdown with X-Man reached new heights as the all-powerful mutant possessed Legion.
The Champions expanded their own roster and began the year with an impressive 59 points. Young heroes like Bombshell, Power Man and new character Pinpoint, joined the team in Ms. Marvel’s effort to take her team global. With Kamala calling the shots, the heroes split into three groups, spread out across the world and saved several civilians in a masterfully coordinated effort. The Marvel Knights continued the fight to regain their memories while the antagonists behind their current predicament were revealed: Doctor Doom and Kingpin. The second-to-last issue of the mini series featured the most antagonists for the week, but the Knights made quick work of Crossbones, Jigsaw, Taskmaster and Tombstone. However, they ended the book by fighting a confused Black Panther.
Other books of note from the week included the Runaways, which saw an adversary turn into an ally and an ally turn into an adversary; Mr. & Mrs. X had Gambit and Rogue star in Mojo’s latest romance-inspired show, but the Spineless One swapped out one of the leads for Longshot; and Jason Aaron’s first issue of Conan the Barbarian, which scored seven points and put the “sword” in Sword and Sorcery. The prime Wolverine missed out on all the action because the epilogue to Infinity Wars featured the Phoenix version of James Howlett, determined to be a separate version of the character, and the first issue of his Long Night Adaption featured him in a flashback story only and thus did not count as an actual appearance.
