Weekly Marvel Review: August 02, 2023 (Week 31)

They say you can’t go back in life, but the same doesn’t hold true in comics. Doctor Strange learns he led a millennia-spanning war for the Vishanti before returning to his current state with no memory of his time as General Strange. Kitty Pryde returns to her Shadowkat persona to traverse the X-Men’s new dark status quo that is the post-Hellfire Gala. Veteran writer J.M. DeMatteis returns to a time when Magneto led the New Mutants in the latest retro miniseries.

Book the Week – Magneto #1 (Review score: 36 Points; 10 Characters). Despite being dead in the current titles, Magneto returns in a new series exploring his quest to atone for his sins and the struggles that come with that. This includes weathering the suspicious eyes of his students, the New Mutants, and the unwanted admiration for his past crimes by mysterious villains.

Hero of the Week – Iceman (Review score: 10.0 Points/1 Appearance; 10.0 Pts/App). Bobby is the first of the fallen X-Men to return from his Hellfire assassination. He ties with Peter Parker for total score, but earns his first Hero of the Week title for having a broader performance in his one Appearance, including a Save Civilian and Defeats Antagonist.

Antagonist of the Week – Carnage/Symbiote (Review score: 13 Points/1 Appearance; 13.0 Pts/App). The Spider-Man corner of the comics returns to their Venom/Carnage well once more for another symbiotic summer event. The Carnage symbiote earns his latest Antagonist of the Week title and begins hunting down multiversal Venoms.

Top Characters (by review score). Carnage/Symbiote (13); Iceman, Spider-Man/Peter Parker (10); Kate Pryde (9); Hunter’s Moon, Scarlet Witch (8); Magneto (7); Adam Warlock, Invisible Woman, Spider-Man/Miles Morales (6)
