It’s the return of the Macks. Howard Mackie returns to a character he helped create with Danny Ketch: Ghost Rider. Jed MacKay returns several characters to the core Avengers title with a new series following Jason Aaron’s departure. The Hulk receives an Annual in advance of Phillip Kennedy Johnson’s new Incredible Hulk title kicking off in June.
Book the Week – Avengers #1 (Review score: 50 Points; 9 Characters). Iron Man and Thor stick around with the Avengers under Captain Marvel’s new leadership, who recruits Scarlet Witch, Vision and Sam Wilson Captain America to join them. She even manages to coax T’Challa out of his exile. Their first threat comes in Terminus, but Carol soon encounters Kang in the Null Zone, setting the stage for a bigger threat to the Avengers.
Hero of the Week – Captain America/Sam Wilson (Review score: 17 Points/2 Appearances; 8.5 Pts/App). Sam scores his first Hero of the Week title in almost a year, when he scored the title in May of 2022 with the start of his Captain America: Symbol of Truth series. Now his soars to the top of the Hero ranks with the launch of new Avengers title and the ongoing “Cold War” event in the Captain America books.
Antagonist of the Week – Doctor Doom (Review score: 13 Points/1 Appearances; 13.0 Pts/App). Doctor Doom proves once again that Doom is the only character capable of beating Doom. When his attempt to prevent Reed Richards from sending Valeria into the future fails to result in a better outcome he travels back in time to stop himself from defeating the Fantastic Four.
